THE BESSEMER GALLERY is located in Sheffield's Winter Garden in the City Centre, adjacent to the Millenium Galleries. The Millennium Galleries, together with the Winter Garden and the Peace Gardens form Sheffield’s Heart of the City Project, that has transformed the area.
Opened in December 2002, we have rapidly built up a reputation as as a unique establishment sourcing some of the most innovative and sought after contemporary art and fine craft from artists across the UK and Ireland.
The Bessemer exhibits a dynamic selection of jewellery, glass, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, painting, photography and handmade greetings cards. Our exhibitions are continually revised to include new and original items. Staff source items to reflect the diverse styles of contemporary art and fine craft created in the UK and Ireland today.
The Bessemer Gallery is named after the nineteenth century British inventor Sir Henry Bessemer who devised a process for the mass production of steel from iron, which revolutionised steel production and created the wealth upon which the City of Sheffield is founded.
The Bessemer is available for bespoke commissions. If you see something you like, but would prefer a different design or motif etc please contact us and we will liaise with the artist and make the necessary arrangements on your behalf. Previous commissions include a cherry and mahogany occasional table and a pair of felt ladybird slippers!
New artists are welcome apply to exhibit with us. We currently have over 300 artists exhibiting with the gallery and over 5000 items depsoited with us for display, but we are always looking for new and original contributions. Terms are negotiable. Please see our initial Artist Agreement and contact us for further information.
We occasionally hold special themed events and mini-exhibitions coinciding with external festivals and conferences such as Sheffield's 'Galvanize' festival, celebrating Sh
effield's metalwork heritage. In this case, a special collection of hand-crafted jewellery and metalwork items were exhibited in the gallery. The Bessemer is also available after-hours for special events held in the Winter Garden and the City Centre. Please contact us for more information.
